dated July 25, 1958: Summit meeting

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev on July 23 agreed to the Western proposal for a Summit Conference of the United Nations Security Council, provided India and the Arab States were also invited. Mr. Khrushchev, in almost identical letters to the U.S. Britain, France, and India proposed that the conference open next Monday in New York. He said the aim of the proposed Summit Conference on the Middle East situation, should be the conclusion of an agreement, and not the simple noting of existing disagreements through a vote. “What is important is that this meeting should be held as soon as possible, so that solutions, which would help to protect and strengthen peace, may be discussed in a speedy manner, with a view to establishing security in the Near and Middle East area and reducing world tension."
