dated July 25, 1958: Recognition of Iraq

Britain and the United States are in favour of some form of de facto recognition of the new Government in Iraq but their Moslem partners in the Baghdad Pact – Turkey, Iran and Pakistan – are critical of any such proposal, according to well-informed sources in London. Declarations by the new Iraqi Prime Minister and Vice-Premier that the Iraqi national movement is not directed against the West have gone some way to reassure London and Washington on the attitude of the new regime in Baghdad. But there is speculation in London on the possibility of the meeting being postponed a couple of months to give time to the Iraqi Government to settle the lines of its policy.
