Moin-ud-Dowla Cup from August 1

HYDERABAD: The Coromandel King all-India Moin-ud-Dowla Gold Cup invitation cricket tournament will be held at different centres here from August 1, according to D.S. Chalapathi, joint secretary Hyderabad Cricket Association.

Chalapathi said that 12 teams — cricket association teams from Assam, Goa, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Saurashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha besides HCA President’s XI — would be vying for top honours with a winner’s purse of Rs. 3 lakhs up for grabs. The runner-up will get Rs. 2 lakhs.

The championship will also revert to the traditional format of two-days for the league phase and three-days for the semifinals and final. “Andhra Cricket Association expressed its inability to take part in view of the zonal selections scheduled there,” added Chalapathi. He also thanked India Cements for its continued support.

K.V. Deenanath, Assistant Manager (Administration), India Cements, said that it was always a great feeling to be associated with the HCA in organising the event and that was the reason the prize money was also increased. “We hope the players would enjoy the whole ambience ahead of a hectic season,” he said.

Arshad Ayub, vice-president HCA, said that the whole idea of changing the format was to ensure at last two matches for the teams even while efforts were on to provide the best of playing conditions. The teams have been split into four groups with the top team from each qualifying for the semifinals.

“The event assumes significance as the Moin-ud-Dowla would be the curtain-raiser for the domestic season this time ahead of the Buchi Babu and the KSCA invitation tournaments in Chennai and Bangalore respectively,” he added.
