Strictly adhere to SHRC orders: Shankar Bidari

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Taking a serious view of the strictures passed by the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) against police officers, Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari has directed policemen to take the commission’s orders seriously and implement them.

In an order issued to his officers, Mr. Bidari asked the police personnel “not give any scope to the commission to take an adverse view.”

Mr. Bidari’s instructions come in the light of the fine of Rs. 20,000 imposed on the Chief Secretary by the SHRC for the way a matter referred by it was inquired into.

SHRC order

The SHRC had ordered a petition to be inquired by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

The matter was referred to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Division), who forwarded it to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (K.R. Puram).

The ACP referred the matter to the police inspector, Hennur, who inquired into the issue. The SHRC viewed this seriously and imposed fine on the Chief Secretary, who has been given the option of recovering the fine from the officers who committed the lapse.

Mr. Bidari asked the Human Rights Section in the Police Commissioner’s office to carefully look at the SHRC directions and pass appropriate orders.

Strict adherence should be given to the rank of the officer who has been asked to inquire the issue.

The reports should be sent in time and it should be carefully drafted, he said.
