BSNL workers’ union seeks speedy repair of lines

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: The National Union of BSNL Workers (FNTO) has expressed angst at the rise in the number of faulty telephone lines and cables across the district, particularly under the jurisdiction of Manjeri and Tirur area managers.

It warned that the delay in repairing the faulty cables would not only bring bad name on the telecom major, but also jeopardise the existence of the company.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had been critical of the delay in rectifying cable faults, it pointed out.

A meeting of the union held here warned that the delay in repair would distance people from BSNL, especially when a large number were waiting for value-added services such as broadband Internet.

Outsourcing welcomed

The meeting welcomed the decision of BSNL management to outsource the faulty line repair work for the first time. It said that the opposition from some quarters to the BSNL move to give repair work on contract was against the interest of the phone users.

‘Ensure better services’

The union demanded that the increase in the number of people surrendering their phones should be arrested immediately by ensuring better services.

C.K. Ramakrishnan, district president of the union, presided over the meeting. District secretary M. Abdulla welcomed the gathering.
