50 civic workers to ensure cleanliness in villages

Staff Correspondent

They will be appointed on temporary basis by Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat

Chitradurga: Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat will appoint 50 civic workers on temporary basis to ensure cleanliness in villages of Chitradurga taluk, S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Basavarajan said that he had mooted a proposal to take up cleaning of villages regularly. But owning to shortage of staff, the zilla panchayat had decided to appoint workers on a temporary basis.

The work had been included in the projects to be taken up for utilising Rs. 20 crore granted to the district under the Backward Region Grant Fund, he said.

Mr. Basavarajan said that there were 21 gram panchayats in the taluk. One civic worker would be appointed to each gram panchayat which had four villages, two civic workers would be appointed to each gram panchayat which had 10 villages and three civic workers would be appointed to each gram panchayat which had more than 10 villages.

Bicycles, broomstick and a container would be provided to each worker who would be paid Rs. 2,000 a month.

Each village would have a garbage pit. “The workers can produce vermicompost at these pits,” he said.

On the complaint that accountants were not visiting villages regularly as they did not have a specified place to carry out their work, Mr. Basavarajan said that he had asked the zilla panchayat authorities to make arrangements in every gram panchayat office for the purpose. “Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat H.P. Prakash has assured me to table the issue in next general meeting of the panchayat,” he added.
