Cheating charge: disqualification of ZP member recommended

Staff Correspondent

‘The Congress member made false declaration about residential address’

‘He has violated motor vehicle rules of Karnataka and Maharashtra’

‘He is not allowing smooth functioning of the ZP’

Belgaum: The ruling Congress party in the zilla panchayat on Thursday decided to recommend disqualification of senior member Shrishail Parasappa Tugashetti in the wake of reports that he made a “false declaration” about his residential address.

It has asked Superintendent of Police Sonia Narang to take action against Mr. Tugashetti for “violating” the Motor Vehicle Acts of both Karnataka and Maharashtra.

A delegation of zilla panchayat members led by its president Nazir Ahmed Nadaf met Ms. Narang and urged her to take action against Mr. Tugashetti.

Earlier, talking to presspersons along with nearly 25 zilla panchayat members, Mr. Nadaf condemned the “illegal” acts of Mr. Tugashetti who also was a Congress member.

Showing photo copies of documents, he said that Mr. Tugashetti had enrolled his name as a voter in Karnataka by declaring that he was a resident of Ainapur in Athani taluk of Karnataka. But a certificate allegedly issued by a Maharashtra government department on January 15, 2007, declared that he had been residing in Jaisingpur in Kolhapur district for the past ten years. But Mr. Tugashetti was elected in the 2005 zilla panchayat elections. This clearly shows that he had made a false declaration to the State Election Commission, Mr. Nadaf alleged.

Also, Mr. Tugashetti had purchased a sports utility vehicle in December 2005. It was allotted a temporary registration number. He had replaced it by another number, which was allotted by Regional Transport Officer, Sangli (Maharashtra) for an autorickshaw owned by Mirasaheb Chandsaheb of Sangli since November 28, 1997, Mr. Nadaf alleged.

Mr. Nadaf alleged that Mr. Tugashetti had been creating problems in the smooth running of affairs of the zilla panchayat after he was denied the post of chairman of a Standing Committee. He had recently approached the court seeking a stay on constitution of Standing Committees. A decision would be taken in consultation with all the ruling party members on initiating appropriate action against him, Mr. Nadaf said.

The zilla panchyat would also consider taking action against two other members Appasaheb Avatade and Suresh Hunsyal.

Zilla panchayat members Siddarya Yaladagi and A.L. Patil spoke.
