FCRI organises training for 40 SC/ST women

Tuticorin: A three-day skill development training on ‘ornamental fish culture techniques’ organised by the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tuticorin, commenced at Sethukuvaithan village near here on Thursday.

A total of 40 women belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities from the village, were being trained in ‘ornamental fish breeding’, ‘construction of aquarium’, ‘preparation of pellet feed’ and ‘transportation of fish in polythene bags’, by N. Felix, K Rathankumar and M. Rajkumar, all members of faculty at FCRI.

V.K. Venkataramani, Dean, FCRI, said that adoption of ornamental fish culture and breeding activities would improve the socio-economic status of SC/ST women in the village, with very less capital investment.

He said that the institute had made arrangements to market the ornamental fish bred from the hamlet, to wholesale dealers in the district.

Project reports for loans

Once the training was completed, the institute would extend technical assistance to the women to prepare project reports for availing loans from Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, to establish production units. Earlier, M. Bose, Revenue Divisional Officer ( Tiruchendur sub-division), inaugurated the training.
