City police gear up to deal with hi-tech offences

BHUBANESWAR: With various unconventional crimes beginning to surface, Commissionerate has decided to make police personnel skilful at police station level to handle different types of crimes.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sushant Kumar Nath said efforts were being made to deal with property crimes, economic offences and cyber crimes with separate set of skills.

“Due to multifarious duty of police officials, these crimes were used to be handled in conventional way. Now we are trying to deal these cases separately at police station level. We are hopeful of getting encouraging results due to the effort,” Mr. Nath said.

Under the economic offence otherwise known as white-collar crimes, police officials will deal with cheating, impersonating, documental scams and credit card fraud.

Similarly, although there was special police station under crime branch of State police to investigate into cyber crimes, at police station level the personnel would be given orientation about the fundamentals of such crimes, ACP said.

He was briefing media about busting of a four-member group that misutilised credit card of a New Delhi-based businessman who lost his wallet in the city.

“The four persons in their 20s had purchased different items worth Rs. 1 lakh within a couple of days,” Mr. Nath said.

The businessman was identified as Debendra Kumar who was associated with the upcoming film 1920 directed by Vikram Bhatt, city police said.

Within last couple of days, city police managed to arrest 21 persons in 11 cases under five police stations.

As many as four motorcycles, one auto rickshaw, 10 mobiles and gold chains were seized from these criminals.

Meanwhile, a special squad had been constituted under Deputy Commissioner of Police Himanshu Lal to take pre-emptive action against anti-social elements.
