NCC organises rally against female foeticide

For a cause: NCC cadets taking out a rally in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

BHUBANESWAR: For most cadets of the NCC here, Thursday was a different day. Rather than sweating out in field learning skills of shooting or drills and improving physical fitness, they were silently listening to impact of female foeticide on the society and learnt their role to fight out the menace.

It was part of NCC’s nation-wide programme to generate awareness on female foeticide under the programme ‘Save the Girl Child.’

Although many of the cadets knew little about the discrimination of girl child in the society, they were not aware of the magnitude of the problem and as to how it was going to have a negative impact on nation’s development.

Sharing some of the disturbing figures with the cadets, Visakha Bhanja, a social activist, said according to 1991 census sex ratio was below 950 to 1,000 in only two districts of the State while now it had spread to as many as 12 districts.

Ironically the districts such as Khurda, Cuttack or Nayagarh where there was high concentration of educated mass, the child sex ratio was very skewed, she said.

Cadets were curious to know about how they could do their duty to fight the social menace.

Experts responded that the NCC cadets could identify discrimination against girl children in families and neighbourhood and raise voice against it.

Earlier, the cadets took out a rally from Maushima Mandir to campus of Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) carrying placards and banners written with negative effects of female foeticide.

Addressing the convention, officiating Director General of Orissa Directorate Colonel B. C. Mohanta described the role of NCC in providing help to the civil administration in curbing such social curses.

BERHAMPUR: More than 500 NCC cadets took part in a rally aimed at building up consciousness to stop abortion of female foetus and to save the girl child on Thursday.
