Chamarajanagar: The failure of monsoon has led to a crop loss of Rs. 17.59 crore in the district till June. The district has cultivable land 1.84 lakh hectares. SowingSowing could be completed only in 55,106 hectares of land as against the target of 1.42 lakh hectares for 2008-09. Rain-fed crops such as jowar, ragi, maize, sunflower, groundnut have been affected owing to poor rainfall. Farmers have cultivated foodgrains in 26,540 hectares of land and oilseeds in 25,739 hectares and commercial crops in 2,817 hectares. AffectedThe sources in the Agriculture Department said that crops grown in 7,227 hectares of land in Chamarajanagar taluk, 13,140 hectares in Gundlupet taluk and 2,761 hectares in Kollegal taluk had been affected. SeedsThe district had sought 26,562 quintals of seeds and 39,540 tonnes of fertilizers, they said. The Chamarajanagar taluk received 10.9 mm. of rain in July as against normal rainfall of 36.4 mm. for the month. Last year, the taluk received only 111.6 mm of rain. Gundlupet taluk received 16 mm. in July as against normal rainfall of 69.3 mm, Kollegal taluk received 23.2 mm as against normal rainfall of 67 mm and Yelandur taluk received 28 mm as against normal rainfall of 53.5 mm. Average rainfallThe average rainfall in the district was 19.5 mm in July as against normal rainfall of 56.5 mm for the month. Last year, it was 102.2 mm.
