100 new buses for Virudhunagar: Nehru

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The State Government will induct 1,000 new buses for Madurai Division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, the Transport Minister, K.N. Nehru, has said.

Flagging off 12 new buses here on Thursday, Mr. Nehru said that the economics of the Madurai Division has not seen any improvement in the last two years, for many buses of other divisions were being operated through its jurisdiction. Besides, it was operating more number of city/town bus services than that of muffosil buses. When the issue was taken up with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, he ordered to induct 1,000 new buses for the division, he said.

The new buses would be inducted within three months and those vehicles that were put to use for more than seven years would be withdrawn. Among the 1,000 new buses, 100 are for Virudhunagar district, the Minister added.

Stating that Rs.40 crore of Provident Fund was to be disbursed to the transport employees, and spare parts were to be procured for the buses, the Minister said that the Chief Minister had allocated Rs.35 crore from the Government funds.

The Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, said the TNSTC buses sported better look after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government took over.

The Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu, wanted to establish a TNSTC workshop at Kariyapatti, to which Mr. Nehru responded positively.

The Minister has also asked the officials to look into a proposal to swap the TNSTC depot to the new bus stand and vice versa for the convenience for the people of Virudhunagar.

Later, the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, inspected a 3.5-acre site at Kariyapatti to see whether the proposed TNSTC workshop could be set up there.
