Opposition walkout over League House attack

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition walked out of the Assembly on Thursday protesting when the Speaker K. Radhakrishnan disallowed an adjournment motion to discuss Wednesday’s attack on the League House in Kozhikode.

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MLA Abdurahiman Randathani, who sought permission to move the motion, alleged that his party’s State office was attacked by the CPI(M) cadres.

He said that the defeat of the Left-sponsored no-confidence move against the Manmohan Singh government at the Centre had irked the CPI(M) cadres.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar, who fielded for the government in the absence of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, countered this charge by stating that the attack could have been the handiwork of IUML workers who wanted to distract public attention from the party’s position on the “objectionable” Indo-US nuclear deal.

He that a said police investigation was on and the men who had thrown stones at the League House would be identified and brought to book.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition G. Karthikeyan said that the Minister’s reply was “provocative and undignified.”

He listed several other instances of such attacks against the Opposition parties in the recent days and said that in none of them the police had identified the culprits. The police too were in this game, he alleged, announcing the walkout.
