Ruling reserved on adjournment motion

BANGALORE: Officiating Chairman of the Legislative Council N. Thippanna on Thursday reserved his ruling on whether the Opposition should be allowed to move an adjournment motion in the House on the episode of Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat’s wife, Padmapriya, committing suicide in mysterious circumstances.

Earlier, the Opposition members sought to move the motion. Making preliminary submissions on the admissibility of the motion, they alleged that the manner in which the Government had handled the episode had given rise to suspicion.

The episode had created fear among women as it demonstrated that there was no security in society for even a person like Padmapriya, who came from a politically influential family, the Opposition members said.

M.P. Nadagouda (JD-U) alleged that the incident was a pointer to the lapses in the administration of the Home Department, a portfolio held by V.S. Acharya.

V.S. Ugrappa (Congress) said Dr. Acharya should have resigned, owning moral responsibility for what happened.

Leader of the Opposition Veeranna Mathikatti said the motion should be allowed as the topic was of utmost public importance.

M.C. Nanaiah and Y.S.V. Datta (JD-U) argued that the death of Padmapriya reflected the failure of the Government to protect the life of a helpless woman in a far-away place in mysterious circumstances.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party members maintained that the ongoing investigation would be affected if a discussion was allowed. They appealed to Mr. Thippanna to reject the plea by the Opposition members to move an adjournment motion.

Dr. Acharya said the Government had nothing to hide about what had happened. “We have not erred anywhere,” he asserted.
