State to bid for power

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: In its bid to improve the power supply situation in the State, the Government, for the first time, has decided to shop for power online. This was decided at a Cabinet on Thursday.

Surplus power produced by various States and the Centre is traded on the national energy exchange where it is sold to the highest bidder, an official said.

The State Cabinet decided to bid for power at Rs. 7.50 a unit. The State faces a shortage of 600 to 700 MW. The Government would buy 500 MW from the Power Trading Corporation and 50 MW each from Jindal and Tata firms, the official said.

On Wednesday, the State Government decided to impose 20 per cent power cut till the end of this month and 25 per cent in August on account of the low storage in reservoirs. To augment power generation, the Government has decided to inaugurate a 500 MW unit of the Bellary Thermal Power Station on July 28, the official said.
