International jewellery fair begins

Jewellery expo likely to attract over 10,000 visitors

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Jewellery, Pearl and Gem Fair (HJF) -2008, the largest international jewellery show in South India, commenced on Thursday at HITEX Exhibition centre, Madhapur. The fair will be on till July 27.

Minister for Major Industries J. Geeta Reddy inaugurated the exhibition. Exhibitors from 15 countries including Italy, Myanmar, Israel, Hong Kong, Japan and Belgium are participating in the event.

SEZ coming up

Later speaking to presspersons, Ms. Geeta Reddy said the expo would provide an opportunity to entrepreneurs to learn the global trends of the industry.

She hinted at the possibility of Hyderabad becoming a centre for diamond cutting industry with the coming up of gem and jewellery Special Economic Zone (SEZ). “With the upcoming SEZ, Hyderabad will be placed next to the major diamond cutting cities like Surat and Ahmedabad,” said Ms. Reddy.

Already works have started at the SEZ and 5,000 youth are undergoing training, she added.

Jewellery mall

Ms. Reddy said that the State government was setting up an exclusive jewellery mall on Road No. 10, Banjara Hills with all modern amenities. She requested the industry players to utilise the opportunity. HJA president M. L. Gupta said the expo was expected to attract 10,000 visitors.

“There are price discounts and visitors have a wide variety of designs to pick up. The exhibition is open for general visitors only on the weekend,” said Mr. Lal.

Wide range

A vast range of international designs are on display at the expo, particularly diamonds from Japan and diamond-studded jewellery from Thailand.

The auxiliary service providers such as Lemier Secure Ltd., a logistics provider for gem and jewellery exports, and International Gemological Institute that certifies the genuineness of diamonds were also on the show.

The Department of Legal Metrology set up a kiosk to verify the weight of jewellery and precious stones.
