TIRUCHI: About 584 women’s self-help groups in the district have been extended credit to the tune of Rs.6.11 crore till the end of June during the current financial year, according to Renuka Mohan Rao, Chief Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, the lead bank for the district. Banks should work in coordination with the Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation and voluntary organisations to quickly disburse the Rs.34 crore of direct advances to the SHGs, targeted for the year, she said. Speaking at a review meeting of bankers, chaired by Collector T.Soundiah here on Wednesday, Mrs.Rao said about 786 SHGs were provided revolving funds and another 160 economic assistance, totally worth Rs.6.58 crore, during the previous financial year in the district. All banks in the district have been advised to achieve the targets in releasing credit to the SHGs. She pointed out that 74,800 farmers of the district have benefited from the crop loan waiver scheme announced by the Union Government. The waiver amounted to Rs.150.66 crore. Steps were being taken to ensure that all farmers were brought under the crop insurance scheme which closes by the end of this month. Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency J.Dhanasekaran, Assistant General Manager of Reserve Bank of India Selvaraj, District Development General Manager of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Solomon Paul Jayaraj and other officials attended the meeting.
