Jayalalithaa rejects Karunanidhi’s charge
Special Correspondent
Jayalalithaa
CHENNAI: Using his clout with the Centre, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should make efforts to overcome the power crisis in the State and retrieve Kachatheevu instead of blaming her, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa said on Thursday.
Contending that power shortage existed ever since the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government assumed office, she said in a statement that Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami had flatly denied it when she pointed it out on many occasions.
Referring to Mr. Karunanidhi’s statement that the problem would not have arisen if the previous AIADMK regime had shown interest in setting up power projects, Ms. Jayalalithaa claimed that taking into account wind mills set up during 2001-2006, when the AIADMK was in power, the capacity addition was 2,047 megawatt.
It was about 561 MW during 1996-2001, when the DMK was in office.
She recalled that when she was the Chief Minister, memoranda of understanding were signed with the NTPC and the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) for setting up two 1,000-MW plants in the State.
She also announced that a demonstration would be conducted at Sivaganga on Friday to highlight the power crisis.
