University ties up with College of Naval Warfare

CHENNAI: The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies of the University of Madras signed a memorandum of understanding with the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai, on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran said under the agreement, the university would offer a postgraduate course, mainly in national security and international relations, besides M. Phil and Ph.D degrees. They were meant for only Navy officers.

A total of 30 naval officers would join the course, which would begin this academic year. The duration would be one year. If need be, the university would provide the officers with guides and external examiners to pursue M.Phil and Ph.D programmes at the College of Naval Warfare.

Commodore R.P.S. Ravi, Director, College of Naval Warfare, said the institution, started in 1988, is functioning under the Headquarters, Western Naval Command. It conducted the Naval Higher Command course for senior officers.

The college had tied up with various universities in the country.

In the past 30 years, the university has tied up with the National Defence College, New Delhi, and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and is offering postgraduate courses for military officers of the country and from abroad, Dr. Ramachandran said.

The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies was located closer to the coastal region.

This would help to enlarge the scope of research, both in micro and macro issues of maritime dimension, said Gopalji Malviya, Head, Department of Defence and Strategic Studies.
