ASSESSING PROGRESS: (From left) Chief Secretary L. K.Tripathy, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan, Local Administration Minister M. K. CHENNAI: The steering committee set up by the State government to ensure speedy implementation of rehabilitation and reconstruction schemes for tsunami-affected people in Tamil Nadu met here on Thursday to review the progress of various measures. Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan, who is the chairman of the committee, while presiding over the meeting said schemes to the tune of Rs.5,074 crore were being implemented in 13 coastal districts on a long-term basis using funds from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, International Fund for Agricultural Development and Constituency Development Fund of MPs and MLAs. The Minister said in the last two and a half years, numerous works were completed at a cost of Rs.1,175 crore. In the last two years, 27,937 houses, constructed at a cost of Rs.559 crore, were handed over to those affected. Unique designThe multi-storeyed tenements were designed in such a way that they would not be affected by salty sea breeze and waves. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, Public Works Departmen Minister Durai Murugan, Revenue and Housing Minister I. Periasamy Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, and Principal Secretaries of various departments attended the review meeting.
