Leela Ratnam CHENNAI: Leela Ratnam, 75, former national president of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs of India and Founder President of the Madras Canine Club, passed away at her residence early on Thursday. She was a prominent member of Chennai society and a significant contributor in the areas of sports, yoga, education, cultural studies and design. Daughter of the first Indian Postmaster-General of India, PKS Chari, she was married to R. Ratnam, Chairman, Sundaram Industries, and Director of the TVS Group Companies. She graduated in Psychology after marriage and the birth of her three children. Mrs. Ratnam was a qualified teacher in Therapeutic Yoga for Women and Children recognised by the KYM Yoga Mandiram in Chennai. A keen sportsperson, she had the distinction of representing Tamil Nadu in two sports events simultaneously — tennis and badminton. Mrs. Ratnam founded the Madras Canine Club 30 years ago. She was also internationally recognised as an expert on pedigree dogs, and was invited to judge dog shows all over the world. Mrs. Ratnam remained active until her illness as the President of Barbara Kelly Home for disadvantaged girls in Chennai. She received the Mahila Sironmani national award for outstanding women in 1996. She is survived by her children — Anita, Pritha, and Srinath.
