Demand to restore reservation in degree and PG courses

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Muslim Employees Cultural Association (MECA) held an unusual march to the Assembly and held a dharna in front of it on Thursday demanding restoration of the 20 per cent reservation in degree and postgraduate (PG) courses which, according to it, had been frozen by the government.

The marchers carried a coffin symbolically containing the reservation.

The leaders of the organisation pointed out that the order reserving the seats issued on July 24, 2007, was not implemented last year but was included in the prospectus for implementation from this year.

The admission process with reservation got underway this year. But it was frozen as per a directive issued by the Higher Education Secretary on July 16.

The MECA wanted the directive to be withdrawn and the reservation order to be implemented from this year itself.

President of the Samvarana Samudaya Munnani A.C. Thanu who inaugurated the dharna described the demand as absolutely fair.

Muslim League leader Kutty Ahamed Kutty, Latheen Katholikka Aikya Vedi president James Fernandez and MECA leaders M. Aliyarukutty, N.K. Ali and M.A. Samad were among those who spoke.
