College student kills self after she fails to clear exam

The other girl had not been well for several years

NEW DELHI: A 21-year-old student of St. Stephen’s College allegedly hanged herself in Kalyanpuri here on Thursday after she failed to clear her final year examination.

Upasana Sahu, a final year student of Bachelor of Arts (Economics), was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her house at Taj Apartments when her mother, a school teacher, returned home in the afternoon.

“Upasana was alone at home when the results were declared in the afternoon. She checked her result on the Internet and slipped into depression when she found that she had failed to clear the exam,” said a senior police officer.

Upasana had reportedly fared poorly in her second year exams as well.

Her father, Sapan Kumar, a lawyer, told the police that his wife found the main door of the house open when she returned from her school in East Vinod Nagar. On entering, she found Upasana hanging in her room. She was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. The body did not bear any injury marks.

The police have recovered a three-page handwritten suicide note from the spot in which Upasana owned responsibility for her death. The note said she was depressed over her poor performance in the examination and decided to kill herself.

Denying any foul play, the police said the handwriting on the suicide note matched Upasana’s writing. “The statements of residents of the apartment are being recorded and the matter is being investigated,” said the police officer.

In another case, 18-year-old girl Priyanka Singh was found hanging from the ceiling of her ground floor house at Mandawali on Wednesday night. She had not been keeping well for several years. Her father is an assistant engineer with the MCD.

Enquiries by the police revealed that she had been under treatment for some mental illness. The police have initiated inquest proceedings.
