Members suggest all-party team to meet Prime Minister

1,000 acres notified for acquisition in Hassan

Bangalore: Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali has said that the Government is confident of the Centre establishing an Indian Institute of Technology in the State as promised.

Replying to a question by M.R. Doreswamy (nominated) in the Legislative Council on Friday, Mr. Limbavali said the Centre had promised that it would establish an IIT in the State during the 11th Plan.

Of the 11 IITs envisaged in the 11th Plan, the Centre had already established eight, including three referred to in the Union Budget for 2008-09.

Following this, Chief Minster B.S. Yeddyurappa had made a written request to the Centre. Besides, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh had assured him (Mr. Limbavali) that the Centre would consider the request, he said.

Members from all parties suggested that the Government take an all-party delegation to the Prime Minister as written requests to the Centre had proved futile.

Some members reminded the Minister that around 1,000 acres of land in Hassan had been notified for acquisition for setting up the institute.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said the Government had decided to appoint 3,000 eligible candidates, who are on the verge of crossing the age limit, as general teachers and 1,700 as special teachers.
