Raichur: Students of the Government Girls’ College and the Government Polytechnic College took out a procession and staged dharna here on Friday seeking completion of work on the girls’ college building and improving drinking water supply to the hostel of the polytechnic college. About 500 students, who boycotted classes, went in a procession from the girls’ college on Station Road to the Deputy Commissioner’s office where they staged a dharna. Shivanand Chikareddy, organising secretary of the district unit of the ABVP, who led the agitation, submitted a memorandum to the district administration, urging it to solve the problems faced by students. He said that the Government had taken up work on the ground floor of the girls’ college and sanctioned Rs. 18 lakh from the Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board to take up work on its first floor. The work was entrusted to the Public Works Department last year. But, no action had been taken to commence the work on the first floor. This had affected about 1,500 students studying arts, science, commerce and diploma courses. Even the Government had failed to recruit a teacher for biology. He said that the students residing in the hostel of the Government Polytechnic College had been facing drinking water shortage for the past 10 days. The issue had been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned in the Raichur City Municipal Council requesting it to take urgent steps to improve drinking water supply to the hostel. But there was no response from the CMC.
