‘Monthly payment of wages discouraging several job-card holders’
Rs. 1.85 crore has been sanctioned for implementing the projects
SOODI (Gadag District): Chief Executive Officer of Gadag Zilla Panchayat B.F. Patil has said that the district administration is contemplating on paying wages to job-card holders under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) on weekly basis instead of once a month. Speaking to presspersons on Friday after a visit to Soodi village in Ron taluk of Gadag district, where watershed development works have been taken up under the NREGS, he said it had been found that disbursement of wages on monthly basis was discouraging those who had registered under the scheme and received job cards. “It is being seen whether wages could be paid on a weekly basis,” he said. Mr. Patil said that 27 watershed development works had been sanctioned to 30 gram panchayats in the taluk, and the works had begun. A sum of Rs. 1.85 crore had been sanctioned for implementing the works, Mr. Patil said. A total 512 works had been sanctioned to the taluk under the scheme and steps were being taken to implement them, he said. Mr. Patil said that 96,419 families had registered under the scheme and 90,000 job cards had been issued to the taluk panchayts. So far, 87,865 job-card holders had opened bank accounts, he said. Deputy Secretary of the zilla panchayat G. Govindaswamy said that an action plan for implementing 9,151 works under the NREGS had been prepared by the district administration.
