PUDUCHERRY: The Revenue Department has decided to intensify the drive against illegal sand mining in Puducherry region. Collector G. Thevaneethi Dhas said at a meeting of officers concerned held on Thursday that it was decided to deploy a squad to maintain round-the-clock vigil. The squad would comprise a deputy tahsildar, two revenue inspectors, four village administrative officers and eight home guards. Mr. Dhas said it was decided to file criminal cases against those who illegally transported sand, besides collecting a fine amount of Rs. 25,000 from first-time offenders. The trucks transporting sand without a protective cover would also be impounded, he said, adding that in such cases the seized material and lorry would be released only after five days. Mr. Dhas said permit had been given to three government agencies - Pondicherry Agro Services and Industries Corporation Limited, Pondicherry Agro Products, Food and Civil Supplies Corporation Limited and Pondicherry Housing Corporative Society - to mine sand from Sankaraparani, Pennaiyar and Malattar rivers.
