Puducherry
It is expected to help students of Union Territory to get 50 % of seats Education Minister thanks Manmohan, Arjun Singh, Sonia PUDUCHERRY: The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has given its sanction for setting up of a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Puducherry, according to Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan. In a statement here on Friday, he said the territorial government had initiated steps to identify 300 acres of land for establishing the NIT. Setting up of the NIT would enable students of the Union Territory to get 50 per cent of seats, besides enhancing their standard of education, he said, expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for sanctioning the Central institute for Puducherry. As per the new admission policy based on the order issued by the HRD Ministry, 50 per cent of seats in the NIT would be earmarked for the students belonging to the State where the institute was located and the remaining would be allotted to candidates of other States, he said. Though certain percentage of seats was earmarked for the students belonging to Puducherry, the new admission policy had posed problems to them in getting admitted to the NIT, Mr. Shahjahan said. However, following a plea which was made to Mr. Arjun Singh in this regard, the Union Minister had informed the territorial government through a letter that 31 seats as per the All India Engineering Entrance Examination merit list would be allotted for the students of the Union Territory for the current academic year alone, Mr. Shahjahan said.
