Government’s move to privatise service of panchayat employees criticised

CHAMARAJANAGAR: Thousands of protesters, under the banner of the district unit of Karnataka State Government Gram panchayat employees and cooks of Akshara Dasoha and assistant Mahamandalas took out a procession here on Friday, urging the Government to fulfil their various demands, including regularisation of service.

Memorandum

The procession started from the Travellers Bungalow and moved through the town before reaching the District Office complex where they submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner G. Jayaram.

Addressing the protesters, district president K.S. Prakash said that there were 1,200 employees, including waterman, attenders, pourakarmikas and bill collectors working at 121 gram panchayats in the district.

Apathy alleged

He said though they had been working for 25 years, the Government had not made an effort to regularise their service.

He alleged that the executive officer of taluk panchayat had made efforts to remove gram panchayat employees and appoint freshers. He criticised the Government’s efforts to privatise the service of panchayat employees.

Mr. Prakash urged the Government to regularise their service and pay the minimum salary as per the guidelines of labour laws.

He also urged the Government to extend medical leave facility, holiday and promotion to gram panchayat employees.

Mr. Prakash said the Mahamandala also urged the Government to fulfil the demands of Akshara Dasoha cooks and assistants.

Their demands also include increase of monthly salary, maternity leave facility and compensation to the family members in case of accidental death.
