BBMP accepts court’s suggestion on khata

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Friday told the Karnataka High Court that 1.78 lakh khatas in Bangalore had been changed under the Saral Khata scheme.

Under the scheme, people need not “run from pillar to post” for change of name in the khata certificate.

The Saral scheme did not insist on the signature of the transferor on the khata certificate.

Justice Rammohan Reddy, who is hearing a case relating to transfer of khata, said it would be more appropriate if the BBMP gave notice to the transferor of a property before changing the khata. This, he said, would reduce incidents of fraud in khata transfer.

BBMP Commissioner S. Submaramya, who was present in the court, said henceforth the palike would ensure that applications for change of khata contained a column for signature of the transferor. Asked what the BBMP would do about the 1.78 lakh cases in which change of khata was effected without giving notice, the palike said it would examine the issue.

Hoarding

Justice Rammohan Reddy on Friday directed the BBMP not to permit installation of a hoarding on a private property on Mahatma Gandhi Road without obtaining the owner’s permission.

The court was dealing with a petition by a U.K. national who had challenged the action of the BBMP in permitting a hoarding to come up on Andrews Building.

The petitioner, Caroline, said the High Court had a few years ago directed the BBMP not to allow hoardings on the house without obtaining her permission.

Justice Rammohan Reddy had during the last hearing ordered issue of contempt notice to the BBMP Commissioner.
