Better prospects: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala inaugurates the KGISL Institute of Technology at Saravanampatti in Coimbatore on Friday. – COIMBATORE: Education should reach the rural youth of the country, Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu, said here on Friday. Inaugurating the KGISL Institute of Technology at Saravanampatty, he said transformation of rural India was a pre-requisite for the progress of the nation. MeasuresThe Union and State Governments were taking measures to make education accessible to the villages where a majority of the population lived. India had about six lakh villages. By guidance and motivation of rural youth, it could become a developed nation, he said. Tamil Nadu was in the forefront in providing education, especially technical education. With the establishment of 71 new self-financing colleges and six new Government Engineering colleges this year, the number of technical institutions in Tamil Nadu had gone up to 349. As the world was growing rapidly, updating knowledge regularly would help students and teachers keep pace with the changing trends. Education was not merely acquisition of knowledge. It was knowledge combined with good conduct. Education should also be value-based and should suit the current developments. More than 50 per cent of the country’s population comprised young people. If India had to catch up with the rest of the world, it had to empower its youth, Mr. Barnala observed. Teachers should explore students’ inherent skills. They should also instil in students the core values of life, will and determination to face the world with courage. Teachers should set themselves as role models, motivate students and help them strive for academic excellence. DemandsIn the changing global scenario, the role of education institutions was multi-dimensional. They should cater to the needs of the growing demands of the nation. Ashok Bakthavathsalam, Chairman and Managing Trustee, KGISL Trust, said the response from the students for the courses offered by the new institution had been overwhelming. The quality of an institution depended on the quality of its students, he said. The Trust would also offer scholarships to students.
