SP expels six MPs

Special Correspondent

Amar Singh

NEW DELHI: The Samajwadi Party on Friday expelled six of its MPs who defied the party whip and voted against the confidence motion in the Lok Sabha on July 22.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh said the party would move the Speaker on Saturday to seek their disqualification.

The six MPs, all from Uttar Pradesh, are Jai Prakash (Mohanlalganj constituency), Munawwar Hasan (Muzaffarnagar), Ateeq Ahmad (Ppur), Budholiya Rajnarayan (Hamirpur), Afzal Ansari (Ghazipur) and S.P. Singh Baghel (Jalesar).

Mr. Amar Singh said while BJP workers attacked the homes of their MPs who cross-voted, “the SP had not engaged in such activity although the BJP routinely describes us as a party of goons.”

He objected to a BJP spokesperson’s statement that MPs who voted in favour of the government “should seek protection from 7 Race Course Road [Prime Minister’s residence] and 10 Janpath (Sonia Gandhi’s residential address].” This kind of intimidation could only be described as “fascist,” he added.
