Davangere to host exhibition of flowers

August 15 to 17


DAVANGERE: The Horticulture Department will organise an exhibition of fruits and flowers from August 15 to 17 on its office premises here to mark Independence Day and birth anniversary of M.H. Mari Gowda, father of horticulture.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Parashivamurthy, Deputy Director of Horticulture, said the objective of the exhibition was to promote gardening. People could bring plants grown in their gardens and display them on the horticulture office premises. Similarly, farmers could bring their agriculture or horticulture produce for display. The department would display flowers of various species. After the exhibition, people could buy saplings of various plant and flower species.

Sericulture, Veterinary and Fisheries departments would also participate in the three-day exhibition, he said.

Carved vegetables would also be on display during the exhibition. Rare plants from Ooty such as orchids and ferns and plants from the Nandi Hills in Bangalore and other places would be displayed. People would be educated on cultivation of flowers such as Zerbera, Cornation, Gladiolus and Bird of Paradise, he said.

There would be a gardening competition and those interested could register their names with the department, he said.

A panel of judges would visit the houses of participants and select the best two gardens.

Winners would be given prizes, he said.

The exhibition was being organised under the supervision of Joint Director of Agriculture Ashwath.

This was the first exhibition outside Bangalore and the department had decided to hold the event every year, he said.
