Stay on extending goods shed timing to continue

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Friday declined to vacate the interim stay on the Railway’s decision to extend the timing of the unloading of goods in certain railway goods sheds to round the clock.

Justice Siri Jagan passed the order when a case filed by certain transporting agents against the change in timing came up for hearing. They pointed out that earlier, the timing had been from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. They could not unload goods during nights because head-load workers could not be employed during nights. The Railways had introduced the timing only in certain goods sheds in Kollam, Kottayam and certain other stations. Also, it would result in paying of huge charges to the Railways.

The court observed that the view of the Railways was myopic. They had not taken into consideration the realities prevailing in the State because of the Kerala Head Load Workers Act.

Self-financing college

The Christian College Management Federation on Friday submitted before the court that it would produce the list of candidates selected from the common entrance rank list for the management seats in four self-financing medical colleges.

The counsel for the federation promised to produce the list to prove that no candidate with less than 50 per cent marks in the common entrance test had been allotted seats. He gave the undertaking when a writ petition filed by Parvathi Jayan challenging the decision of the managements to allot seats only to candidates who had secured 50 per cent marks each in the entrance test and also in the qualifying examination came up.

The petitioner contended that the managements could only consider aggregate marks obtained in the qualifying examination as well as the entrance examination as per the prospectus issued by these colleges.

The federation represented Amala Institute of Medical Science, Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College and Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre.
