HIGH ALERT: Security stepped up on Rajpath in the Capital on Friday evening.

NEW DELHI: A high alert was sounded in the Capital on Friday in the wake of the serial blasts in Bangalore.

Soon after the explosions in the afternoon, high alert messages were flashed to all the police stations across Delhi directing the staff to step up vigil in their areas. Police presence at busy marketplaces like Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and the Walled City of Delhi was stepped up.

Extra police personnel were deployed at religious places like Akshardham Temple, Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place, Birla Mandir on Mandir Marg, Lotus Temple and ISKON Temple.

Though there were no specific intelligence reports suggesting any terrorist activity in the Capital, senior police officers reviewed the security arrangements at all vital government installations.

Central Industrial Security Force personnel deployed at Indira Gandhi International Airport and Delhi Metro railway stations were also put on high alert and security at the other railway stations in the city was beefed up.

Checking of vehicles at all entry points to the Capital has been intensified.

“We are not taking any chances. All counter-terrorism measures have been taken to ensure that no untoward incident takes place,” said a senior police officer, adding that special units have been alerted to keep a close watch on suspicious activities.

Hospitals and the Fire Service have also been put on alert.

The police have appealed to the citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their area. Property dealers and car dealers have been asked to keep an eye on strangers.
