Plea: Members of the Kodagu Growers’ Federation and Kodagu Swabhimana Samrakshana Vedike staging protest at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Madikeri on Friday.

Madiker: Members of the Kodagu Growers’ Federation and Kodagu Swabhimana Samrakshana Vedike on Friday staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding compensation to the coffee crop lost during the previous monsoon, and distribution of RTC and coffee registration certificates, among others.

Speakers Katti Mandaiah, Ramesh Muddaiah, Pandanda Naresh and B.T. Dinesh alleged that a group of people calling themselves as protectors of the environment were responsible for the plight of the people in the district.

Our ancestors had preserved “devara kadu” (sacred groves) pockets, rivers, water bodies and forests in Kodagu when there were no environmentalists, they said.

Let the Department of Forests take a decision to remove all teak plantations in the forests and replace them with jackfruit and other environment-friendly trees, Mr. Mandaiah said.

The proceeds from the sale of teak wood should be used to erect fence to prevent elephants and other animals from straying into human habitations, the protesters said.

The members threatened to launch a counter-protest if the Cauvery Sene went ahead with its proposed agitation in front of the office of the Conservator of Forests here on July 28. Deputy Commissioner K.R. Niranjan, who received the memorandum, said that he had sought Rs. 6 crore from the Government to disburse compensation, which he was yet to receive.
