Kharge slams Government

Special Correspondent

‘Yeddyurappa should exert more pressure on the police’

‘Declare the coast as red alert areas’

BANGALORE: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjuna Kharge has held the State Government responsible for Friday’s bomb blasts in the city.

Mr. Kharge, who met the Governor earlier, told presspersons that the Government had failed to mobilise the police and the intelligence to keep in check the disruptive forces.

Mr. Kharge said the Congress condemned the incidents of bomb blasts in the city and urged the Government to bring the culprits to book.

Mr. Kharge said: “It could be a test run and a much scaled down operation. Whoever has planted these explosives could be waiting for an opportunity to wreak havoc in the near future in a much bigger dimension. The Government should be extremely careful.”

Mr. Kharge said the “Congress would not like to politicise the issue but these were difficult times for the State when the Congress, as the responsible Opposition, will play its role in ensuring peace and normalcy in the State.”

Mr. Kharge said the Chief Minister had been kept in dark about the law and order situation as he did not have details when he announced the news of the blasts in the Legislative Assembly.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa should exert more power over the police and the intelligence and Home Minister V.S. Acharya should be in control of these departments.

He said the Home Minister and the Chief Minister were blaming the Congress and the Centre for all problems the State faced at present, which was not just irresponsible but also a sign of weakness. He said the State was the third commercial centre of the country and many international investors were now looking towards Bangalore as their investment destination.

He said coastal areas of the State had to be declared “red alert areas” and asked the Chief Minister to send orders to Deputy Commissioners.
