CHENNAI: In a significant development aimed at establishing a mechanism for coordinated action with neighbouring States to control cross-border crime and share intelligence inputs on extremism, Director Generals of Police of four southern States and the union territory of Pudhucherry met here on Friday.

Convened by the Tamil Nadu police, the meet focussed on border crimes and steps to be taken to prevent smuggling of ration rice, circulation of counterfeit currency, dacoity and drug trafficking.

Nodal officers

According to police sources, a decision was taken to appoint three nodal officers, one each for intelligence, law and order, and crime, for better coordination with other States.

It was agreed upon to share facilities for training and forensic laboratory. Developments in automation of police functions and e-governance were reviewed.

Innovative practices
