We’ll expedite processes: Rice

P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: The United States will “work very expeditiously” to “get through all of the processes” for translating its civil nuclear energy deal with India into a reality, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Thursday.

After talks with Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith in Perth, she said: “We will continue to consult with countries of the IAEA Board of Governors and with the NSG” for this purpose. The follow-up objective was to “get this done in the [U.S.] Congress.”

She said: “We believe that this deal has been negotiated in a way that [not only] safeguards the equities of both India and the United States but also advances the cause of non-proliferation at a time when countries are seeking access to civil nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.” And, as “India has a very good record on [non-]proliferation, the IAEA chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, had voiced “support” for this deal. So, it was possible to make “a very good case.”
