New water billing system for multi-storeys

CHENNAI: Chennai Metrowater is set to introduce a new billing system for metered water supply connections in multi-storeyed buildings soon.

As per the proposal, the total water consumption of the complex, for the purpose of billing, would be equally divided among the user households and individual bills issued to them. At present, a consolidated bill for the entire consumption of the complex is issued, an official of Chennai Metrowater said.

He said that the new system would take effect as soon as the Chennai Metrowater Board finalises the date of implementation. The billing system is being revised in the view of many residents complaining about exorbitant water charges despite their individual consumption being low.

Pointing out that the fixed rate of Rs.15 per kilo litre for metered connections was withdrawn recently, the official said the slab rate started from about Rs.2.50 per kl and went up to Rs.25 per kl based on the total quantity of water consumed by the apartment.

On Metrowater’s drive to install water meters, the official said the Board was now identifying multi-storeyed and special buildings that have not installed the meters. Out of the 13,000 multi-storeyed buildings identified since March a total of 6,100 buildings have installed meters. In the other categories, including individual houses, about 26,000 structures have been identified.
