Good response to latest traffic changes

Staff Reporter

Bus diversions ease traffic snarls

More changes to bus routes to be made soon

Realignment of bus stops also to be done

KOCHI: The City Traffic Police are encouraged by the good response for the diversion effected for private buses.

The force is planning to bring about more reforms soon.

New traffic diversions were implemented for buses coming from outside the city so as to ease the flow through main roads.

Limited stop buses from eastern side were made to take the Vytilla-Ponnurunni Road to reach Subhash Bose Road and Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road to proceed to Kaloor bus stand.

Ordinary services will deviate from Kadavanthra junction towards Kaloor. Similarly, buses that used to ply along M.G. Road were asked to take the Old Thevara Road to head towards Menaka Junction and Boat Jetty. This is applicable to buses from eastern side as well as those coming in from West Kochi.

The diversions that came into effect from Thursday has proved effective in easing the traffic flow through main roads.

“More changes in the bus routes will be made soon. This will be done after observing the traffic flow.

Realignment of the bus stops will be done after that,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

In another reform, the Vytilla-Vytilla bus services that go in anti-clockwise direction have been asked to turn towards Sahodaran Ayyappan Road from Pallimukku, instead of taking Chittoor Road at Girls High School Junction.

Similarly, more than 30 buses going towards Chottanikkara will go up to Pallimukku before turning to Sahodaran Ayyappan Road.

“While the buses were asked to take Old Thevara Road to reduce the traffic along M.G. Road, buses were asked to reach Pallimukku for the benefit of passengers coming from Ravipuram and Medical Trust Hospital areas,” said K.B. Venugopal, Assistant Commissioner of Police, City Traffic (West).

Earlier, these passengers had to reach the Government Girls High School stop to board the buses or take the risk of boarding while the buses are caught in traffic hold ups at Valanjambalam.
