VISAKHAPATNAM: Speakers at a workshop on Coastal Zone Management (CMZ) decried the destruction of coastal areas and depriving fishermen of their livelihood as a result of undertaking development projects in violation of the rules. The CMZ was issued on May 1, 2008 replacing the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) that was issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 1991. The CMZ aims at integrated development of coastal areas in partnership among the stakeholders (fishermen community). The Ministry of Environment and Forests had placed the CMZ notification on its website and sought the comments of various sections of the people on it. In view of the poor response, the Ministry directed the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) to organise workshops in various districts along the coast to elicit the views of the people on CMZ.
