TAKING A LOOK: Chairman of Auroville Foundation Karan Singh (second from right), at the design exploration for the prototype section of the Crown at Auroville on Saturday. PUDUCHERRY: In line with Auroville’s tradition of environmental and ecological planning, L’avenir d’Auroville, a planning and development organisation of Auroville, proposes design exploration for the “prototype section” of the Crown and will soon come up with the final integrated design solution. The Crown, one of the key features of the galaxy plan of Auroville, is represented as an interconnected flow of built and unbuilt spaces. With a total length of 4.4 km, it will be an interconnected space of mixed land housing communities and facilities, Lalit Kishore Bhati, Coordinator of Urban Planning, L’avenir d’Auroville, said. Karan Singh, chairman of Auroville Foundation, on Saturday took a look at the design exploration. Members of the governing board and the International Advisory Council also met during the day. “The overall galaxy plan will consist of four zones: residential, cultural, industrial and international. The Crown binds all four zones, and each will have its special nature and functional role,” he said. For instance, the cultural zone would consist of facilities for schooling, sports and cultural activities, while the industrial zone would have economic activities and research and development, Mr. Bhati said. At present, the design exploration for the prototype section has two proposals. “We will integrate the two proposals and come up with a unified proposal which will be implemented. The prototype stretch will be for 650 metres between the Solar Kitchen and ARKA,” he said. According to him, the plan should be given a harmonious urban fabric, taking into account the environmental and ecological factors. Detailed studies of land slopes and water flow have been conducted to identify areas where there is better or more percolation. “Based on this, areas where percolation is better will be preserved as open spaces and green areas so that we do not create any ecological problem,” Mr. Bhati said. After a “unified harmonious solution” was arrived at, the organisation would implement the prototype stretch before March next.
