PUDUCHERRY: Though certain recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) were “far reaching,” a few suggestions made by the Commission, especially with regard to opening of more private universities may not augur well for the higher education sector in the long run, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) M. Ramadass said here on Saturday. Speaking at a seminar on “NKC’s report and its impact on higher education” here, he said the government should be cautious when opening more private universities. “There are several examples of deemed universities floating all norms. It could turn out to be a negative move if we don’t plan it properly,” he said. Responding to the remarks of Mr. Ramadass, NKC adviser Ashok Kolaskar said the Commission, in its recommendation, had suggested constitution of a single National Regulatory Authority to oversee the higher education sector in the country. The Commission did not specifically recommend opening of deemed universities in the country, he said. The Commission was not in favour of continuing with the present system of several authorities controlling the higher education sector. Mr. Kolaskar said they had recommended a thorough revamp of the higher education sector including governance of universities and colleges, selection of staff and students, syllabus, examination system and evaluation. The Commission was also of the opinion that changes could not be made in the higher education sector without revamping the school education system, he said.
