GULBARGA: The Chairman of the Karnataka Legal Services Authority and Karnataka High Court judge, V. Gopala Gowda, said on Saturday that the Judiciary and the Press had come together to protect democracy and human rights whenever they were threatened in the country. Inaugurating the Press Day celebrations organised by the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), District Editors’ Association and the Information Department here, Mr. Gowda said that Press played a crucial role in protecting the rights of the people and helping the Judiciary to uphold the rights of individuals in the country. Mr. Gowda said good governance was the essence of democracy and for ensuring good governance, Press played a predominant role and for that reason only “I always say that pen is not only mightier than sword, but also powerful than a nuclear bomb”. The fundamental rights were nothing but natural rights of any human being and it was everybody’s duty to protect them. He pointed out that when any of the three wings of democracy tried to take away the rights of the citizens, it was the Press which rose to the occasion. Mr. Gowda said whenever the Press was under attack, the Judiciary came to its assistance and stood behind it. Mr. Gowda said the Judiciary too had to be protected from any intrusion into its rights. “Without the independence of Judiciary, we cannot achieve the mandate of the Constitution,” he said.
