Constable gets jail for bribe

New Delhi: A city court has sentenced a police constable, who demanded money from a physically-challenged person to allow him to run his shop from a pavement near the Red Fort seven years ago, to 18-month jail.

The offence is “serious.” He had “accepted illegal gratification from a handicapped person who used to earn his livelihood by selling articles,” Special Judge S.P. Garg said, rejecting constable Vijay Narain’s leniency plea. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 after holding him guilty under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. “Instead of performing his duty honestly as a member of the disciplined force, the accused himself indulged in illegal activity and exploited the helplessness of the complainant.”

The prosecution’s case was that Narain was caught near the Red Fort by anti-corruption sleuths on Januay 16, 2001, when he took Rs. 500 as part of the “monthly charge” from Raj Kumar, who was selling books.

It examined nine witnesses to prove its charge. — PTI
