‘Opportunity India’ conclave to be held on August 14 Singapore Tourism Board to lend international touch SINGAPORE: An ‘India Expo’ will be held here next month under the banner of Chennai-based Zak Trade Fairs & Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd., with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Indian High Commission supporting the event, according to the organisers. Styled as ‘Zak Salaam India Expo’ and being held for the second successive year under the same corporate auspices, the five-day event will begin on August 13. It is expected to feature nearly 200 Indian firms, including those based here. “The intended focus is a large spectrum of products and services to be showcased under the punch-line of “Sources from India.” A key ‘value-add’ this year is said to be the ‘Zak Indo-ASEAN Business Initiative Award’ in several categories of services such as tourism, education and the information technology-enabled sector. The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), which associates itself with the entire expo by setting up a pavilion for its members, has been assigned the task of selecting the winners. India-based corporate players with links to Southeast Asia are eligible for the awards, slated for presentation on August 13. The STB, by supporting the award initiative, is seen to lend a touch of international class, according to the organisers. To be featured, at the time of the awards ceremony, is a fashion show, which will be choreographed by Shaina N. C., about the saree as suitable attire. This particular show is in addition to a daily demonstration of the elegance of saree as bridal attire in today’s globalised setting. The centrepiece of interactive sessions for the services and industry sectors is the planned ‘Opportunity India’ conclave on August 14, and the organisers hope to make it a thematic event. Some of the other highlights are a daily ‘India Carnival,’ complete with an ‘Artisans Village,’ and a food festival, which too will be in focus on all days of the expo. And, a cultural event is to be presented by Suhasini Maniratnam on August 16. India’s High Commissioner S. Jaishankar, STB’s Assistant Chief Executive Officer Aloysius Arlando, and a top FIEO official, Sandeep Gupta, welcomed the expo initiative at a curtain-raiser function here. Syed Zakir Ahmed, Zak Trade Fairs & Exhibitions Chairman and Managing Director, said Indian corporate players were now discovering the ASEAN region, through Singapore, as a new destination for exports. This was the inspiration behind the plans for his company’s ‘Zak Salaam India Expo’ for the second successive year.
