Railway hospitals to be upgraded

HUBLI: V.K. Ramteke, Director-General, Railway Health Service, Railway Board, has said that the Board will be taking measures to upgrade healthcare facilities in railway hospitals across the country.

He was delivering the keynote address after inaugurating a two-day All-India Multi-Speciality Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme organised jointly by the Scientific Association of Medical Officers and the Railway Central Hospital of South Western Railway here on Saturday.

Dr. Ramteke said the Railway Board had held discussions on some new policies and they would be brought into force in the coming days.

He said around 860 hospitals and 560 clinics or health units were functioning under the Indian Railways where 2,500 doctors and 50,000 paramedical staff looked after the healthcare needs of railway staff and their family members.

Dr. Ramteke said 1,000 senior surgeons were recently recruited by the Board for providing the best healthcare to the railway personnel.

About the century-old Railway Central Hospital, he said it was one of the best hospitals among the railway hospitals in the country.

Presiding over the function, General Manager of South Western Railway Praveen Kumar said Rs. 8.4 crore had been sanctioned for upgrading the hospital.

R.P. Tatwade, Chief Medical Director, said the Central Hospital, Hubli, took care of the needs of 1,65,500 families and 1,400 retired railway employees.

Senior railway officials Anurag, D.G. Diwate, S.K. Behera, and president of the SWR Women’s Welfare Organisation Rita Kumar were present. Delegates from 15 zonal railways are participating in the CME programme.
