Rainfall easees power shortage situation

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Energy Minister K. S. Eshwarappa on Saturday said the rains in the catchment area of the major hydel reservoirs as well as some of the dry districts had created hopes for the power sector.

The Minister told presspersons here that the major hydel reservoir of Linganamakki had been receiving an inflow of about 22,500 cusecs. Mr. Eshwarappa said the Government would relax the ongoing loadshedding if the rainfall situation improved in the State.

Sources said the Government might review the power situation in the State on Monday in the wake of rains in the last two days.

According to sources in the Energy Department, the State’s daily consumption had come down to about 85 million units from 115-120 MUs. Such a reduction was said to be the combined effect of rains as well as load shedding.

Fall in demand

Rains in some dry districts, which use power as they had a number of irrigation pumpsets, were said to have contributed to slight reduction in the usage.

Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday said he would pray to the god to improve the rainfall situation in the State. “I am a staunch believer in the God. I will go to temple and pray to him to rescue the state from deficit rainfall. I am confident that the situation will improve,” he said.
