Special Correspondent

KARAIKUDI: Statues of former chief ministers C.N. Annadurai and M.G. Ramachandran were damaged at Karaikudi, leading to tension in the town on Saturday.

According to the police, some shopkeepers who had come to open their establishments in the morning saw the damaged M.G.R statue. The statue of Annadurai near the Koppudayamman temple was also found damaged.

As news spread, a large number of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam workers led by former minister Nainar Nagendran and district secretary C. Palanisamy gathered in front of the MGR statue.

They took out a rally, protesting against the incident. Shops in some parts of the town were shut down fearing trouble.

The Superintendent of Police, Sivaganga district, N. Kannan, told The Hindu that two persons had been detained.
